When I took on teaching five POUNDFit classes a week – including night classes when the girls are at their Dad’s – I knew there were going to be a lot of times that Mike would be on his own dinner. In the past Mike would just not eat when I was gone, meaning I would come home to a grumpy, hangry man… that was not fun. Since Mike tells everyone he “hates to cook” I needed to find something quick and easy and filling that he could make when I was gone. I know how much he likes “Barbecue Burgers” from a local restaurant, so I thought I might be able to recreate it! Midge and I headed off to Publix to check out the new Ball Park® Patties to see what we could find to make his meal prep quick and easy.
I knew to look for the Ball Park® Patties in the frozen section, but after scouring the section where I thought they would be, I could not find them. Turns out they actually keep them in the freezer cases on the floor! And man did they have a lot of different kinds!
There are actually seven different varieties of Ball Park® Patties to choose from! I got Mike the Ball Park® Flame Grilled Patty Original and then I got the New Chicken Patty Hickory Smoked Bacon & White Cheddar for me!
Making the Ball Park® Patties is super easy – literally two minutes in the microwave and they are ready to eat. The patties are already fully cooked and have a delicious flame-grilled taste. I couldn’t believe how it made my whole kitchen smell like I was grilling out on the grill – not nuking something in the microwave! I got him whole wheat buns, some shredded white American cheese and of course some frozen french fries that he can heat up along with his burger for a whole meal. But to really make it special I wanted to make him some homemade barbecue sauce to add to it for that final touch. Mike loves putting barbecue sauce on just about everything, so I knew he would love to top his patty with a tangy, sweet barbecue sauce.
Homemade Barbecue Sauce
- 2 cups ketchup
- 1/4 cup worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- 2 tbsp molasses
- 2 tbsp ground mustard
- 1 tbsp your favorite BBQ rub – I used Velata Santa Maria BBQ
The homemade barbecue recipe is as simple as cooking the Ball Park® Patties is really. Throw everything in the pan and simmer 10-15 minutes or until it thickens. Voila! It even saves for up to two weeks in the refrigerator, so I can make him a batch to use again and again while I am out teaching.
I have to admit, this burger easily rivals the burgers we get from our local burger joint – except this one can be made in minutes right at home and without the hefty price tag. And now that Mike has something quick and easy to make for himself for dinner, I do not have to worry about coming home to a hungry bear on the nights that I teach. It is a win-win for both of us!
Ball Park® and Publix have teamed up with a sweepstakes that is just as easy to win as their delicious patties are to cook! Check out the Hall of Flame Sweepstakes for your chance to win up to a $1,000 Publix gift card!
