Remember a while back when I told you about Referral Leaders International – the amazing networking group I am in? One of the best parts of RLI is that each chapter gets one non-profit seat, and ours is taken by my friend Michelle from the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Saint Vincent de Paul is a non-profit organization which helps homeless and needy families in our Pensacola area. Through services such as food pantries, prescription assistance, thrift stores, and a shower and laundry facility, Saint Vincent de Paul is dedicated to helping those who have fallen on hard times get back on their feet in a loving and supportive environment.
I have had the pleasure of learning more about Saint Vincent de Paul in the months I have been a part of RLI and I am looking forward to getting more involved with some of their upcoming events that I wanted to share. The Seventh Annual Friends of the Poor Walk is coming up Saturday, September 26th at Catholic High School. The Friends of the Poor Walk is a unique national fundraising effort organized nationally and locally by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul chapters. It allows community members from all walks of like across the country to participate in a simultaneous, nationwide event to raise national awareness of the challenges faced by the nation’s poor. There is no registration fee, but walkers are encouraged to make a monetary donation and collect donations from friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers to benefit the ministry. All walkers who register with a minimum of $25 in donations will receive a shirt for the event.
The walk will begin at 8am around the Catholic High School track. In addition to the walk there will be live music, face painting, balloon sculpture, craft tables, Zumba demos and more! There will even be hamburgers and hotdogs for the walkers too! One of the things I think is really cool is that all of the walkers have been asked to bring a pair of new or slightly worn shoes to line the track with during the walk. After the walk, all of these shoes will be donated to the homeless. As a girl with a whole lot of shoes – it made me pause to realize how much I take for granted just being able to pick up a new pair of running shoes every time I want them.
I am excited to be participating in the Friends of the Poor Walk with several of my friends from SweatSisterz as well as my RLI Family. We will also be attending Spirit Night for the Friends of the Poor Walk at Newk’s Eatery on Bayou Blvd August 31st! All proceeds will be going towards the walk activities, so join us for some good food and good company and register to walk with us in September!
