Back in November I asked on Facebook if a “normally healthy person still needed to get the flu shot.” My friend (and nurse) Jamie told me clearly – GO GET THE SHOT. But ya know, I got busy…. I hate shots… I forgot. Whatever, I can think of a dozen excuses. Well, after my last week – I am here to tell you – Go. Get. The. SHOT!
In 1998 the “flu shot” was just coming on the scene “to the masses” (or at least, that is when I remember it getting big) because as a Navy Wife we were practically REQUIRED to get the shot. I remember this well because within 3 days of getting the shot I was the sickest I have ever been in my life. Apparently “back then” they would give you the shot of the live virus (someone thought this was a good idea?!) to make your body immediately fight it off… somehow making you immune to it. (can you tell I am NOT the one with the medical degree?!)
Anyhow, I have refused to get it again since that experience, but for some reason I had the thought back in November that I should get one. Maybe I clenched my fate then. I of course didnt get one, and I spent 4 days last week COMPLETELY useless. And naturally it was while I was in Texas.
Now that I have recovered I am on a rampage telling everyone to GET A FLU SHOT! Do not go through what I went through last week! It was awful. FOUR DAYS. Four days I did nothing but lay around my hotel room and feel sorry for myself. Four days I sneezed, coughed, wheezed, sniffled (or was so blocked I couldnt breathe), ached and just in general felt miserable. Four Days.
I am glad to say I am “back” now, and will be blogging more than once a WEEK (ugh) but seriously, go get a flu shot if you haven’t already. It is nasty, it is miserable, and no one deserves to feel that bad. (Ok, well, maybe I can think of a few people…like people who create computer viruses. Yes, those people should NOT get a flu shot. Everyone else, go get the shot!)
