Today as I was driving home from dropping the girls at school I heard the news about the results for the Iowa Caucus. Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts Governor, beat out former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum…
by eight votes.
The final results, announced early Wednesday by the Iowa GOP, showed Romney had 30,015 votes to 30,007 for Santorum.
Now I have to tell you, I have only spent about 1% of my time lately paying any attention to politics – as I really do not understand any of it until it comes time for ME to actually do some voting…. but this made my jaw drop.
EIGHT votes? Really?
That is like losing the Superbowl by one point. The Masters by one stroke. Wimbledon by a double fault.
I do not know much about the guys running at this point- other than their names and stands on a few select topics – but regardless a loss that is *thisclose* is pretty staggering for Santorum. Personally I would rather lose by an absolute landslide than to know that it was just out of reach.
Everything I have read says that this dos not mean much – a small battle victory in the beginning of a huge war – but I sure hope – more for the candidates sake than anything- that things are not this close throughout the rest of the election. As much as I like the fun and excitement of a close football game, I always feel bad for those that lose by so little.
What are your predictions for this years candidacy? Think these results show us anything about how the next year will go?
