This morning while perusing Facebook I ran across an article that a friend of mine had shared about the recent “Ban” of King Sized Candy Bars. The original writer “Mr Conservative” – whose website header dons an image of cleavage, beer, and …”artwork!?” – is appalled that “liberal lifestyle police” are now cracking down on something as silly as candy bars. Or that they are cracking down on the spirit of free choice at all.
I responded to my friends Facebook post with “and this is a BAD thing!?” Where I was quickly told that the issue itself doesn’t matter, but that the Government “stepping in” and the “elimination of free choice” is the problem.
Ok, let’s go there for a moment.
First of all I agree that the Government should have as little control as possible to keep us a free and protected country. However, at what point is it ok for them TO step in? Or is it ever?
Our “free will” has led us to a nearly 40% obesity rate in America. Our “free will” has led to over a half a million people dying from obesity related illnesses each year. Our “free will” has led to hundreds of thousands of people opting for major surgeries to help them control themselves when it comes to food.
Another commenter piped in that we should “learn to control ourselves” and “make better choices” – which I wholeheartedly agree with… but hasn’t evidence shown that the bottom line is it AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN? Up until this point the Government has not controlled any of this but has however spent billions of dollars in medical costs to try and overcome the “Obesity Epidemic” that WE –and all of our free will – have created.
In a “perfect world” the idea of everyone “controlling themselves” would work – but as we know, things are not perfect. A persons choice to eat trash food does not only affect him or her – it affects ALL of us. Those billions of dollars the Government is spending… yes, we like to call that “taxes.” And the reason why honest, healthy people like me can not afford health care… that’s because insurance companies are too busy treating people whose “free will” allowed them to eat themselves into a debilitating disease that costs thousands to treat – and often result in death anyway.
Companies have made it faster, easier, and more economical to eat trash food. A “meal” for $2.99 is a joke. The nutritional value of a cheeseburger and fries – with a “Diet” soda of course – is appalling, yet pass any fast food restaurant at 12noon and the line is wrapped around the building. Since my family and I have begun “Eating Clean” – eliminating nearly all processed food from our diet – our grocery bill has nearly doubled. Eating healthy is more expensive than eating crap. THAT alone is a problem.
Sadly after a few hours of research and debate – all via my poor friends Facebook wall (sorry about that Jon lol) – it looks more like Mars’ choice to stop carrying the King Size bars probably has very little to do with Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” Healthier America Agreement and much to do with fancy marketing as the King Size are simply being replaced by two smaller mars which together have very little caloric difference than the one King Size bar. But the question still remains –
SHOULD the Government have the ability to control what we are and are not allowed to eat or feed our families by “outlawing” such foods that have a direct connection to the obesity epidemic?
Personally I think at some point someone has to step in and “save us from ourselves” and the downward spiral that is the current American Health Crisis. I think outlawing candy bars – even if it was true – is not even scratching the surface, but at least is one itty bitty tiny step in the right direction.
