Growing up I was never into dolls. I never played with Barbie, didn’t care anything about baby dolls – I was all about stuffed animals and figurines, and my all time favorite – Sylvanian Families. If you are a child of the 80’s you know EXACTLY what I am talking about.
I had jillions. Ok, well maybe not jillions, but I am pretty confident I had every single one they made through 1989. (there are benefits to being an only child) I even had the two-story deluxe house with all of the little furniture, the playground set for the yard, the vegetable cart that Mr Rocky Babblebrook sold from, the entire Wedding Party for the Ivory Rabbits… I mean the WORKS. I spent HOURS playing with these, and even carried some of the babies around (mostly Baby Lindy Slydale and Baby Charity Chestnut – a fox and a raccoon respectively) in my pockets to school.
Last night as I was at Toys-R-Us I was stopped dead in my tracks by an entire display of Sylvanian Families but after closer inspection saw that they have changed their name to… Calico Critters. (THAT’S what happened to them!!) I stood there in complete awe remembering the days and days of playing with my Sylvanian Families at my late grandmothers house. It’s amazing how memories can come flooding back over something like that.
I did not buy any of them while I was there, but I do think Santa will be heading to Toys-R-Us to begin the Toddler’s collection of Sylvanian Families. And, if no one is looking, I willing to bet the Tween will join in as well. Meanwhile I will be rooting around in the attic as I know my original ones are around here somewhere.
I know it is silly, but I am so excited to see that the Sylvanian Families (what I will always call them) have made a comeback, and I am excited that my girls and I will get to make the same memories I had with these little critters and my Mamalo.
