When I began Whole30 back in July, it was solely, 100% for vanity reasons – I wanted to look better. That was it. But by week two, everything had changed so dramatically, that I knew this was going to be way more than a “diet” – and I was going to have way more reward than a couple pounds. Sleeping through the night, clearer skin, shinier hair – just to name a few. Since completing my W30 I have spent a lot of time focusing on food and how it makes me feel. I have also become the girl that spends three hours in the grocery store reading the labels… often breaking in to a mild pirate sounding rant over the ingredients in our “healthy” food. When I had the opportunity to read What The Fork Are You Eating? a new book that takes a closer look at what is on those grocery store shelves, I jumped at the chance. The book is both terrific and infuriating at the same time.
When your groceries are labeled “low-fat,” “sugar-free,” and even “natural” and “antibiotic-free,” it’s easy to assume that you’re making healthy choices. Yet even some of those seemingly wholesome offerings contain chemical preservatives, pesticides, and artificial flavors and coloring that negatively affect your health. In What the Fork Are You Eating?, a practical guide written by certified chef and nutritionist Stefanie Sacks, MS, CNS, CDN, we learn exactly what the most offensive ingredients in our food are and how we can remove (or at least minimize) them in our diets. Sacks gives us an aisle-by-aisle rundown of how to shop for healthier items and create simple, nutritious, and delicious meals, including fifty original recipes.
I dove in to this book the moment it arrived and have loved every page. The book will both educate you and tick you off – showing some of the horrible fillers and additives that are put in to our food here in America and what negative side effects they can have on both your physical and mental health. I can tell you first hand that the changes that I have made in the last 6 months have made me in to a completely different person. In fact I didn’t even realize how bad I felt and how much damage I was doing to my body until I made those changes and started seeing the difference in how I looked and felt.
The Supermarket Strategies and Meal Rehab Sections are my favorite – literally giving you a fool proof way of making changes to your diet and your habits that are necessary to live a truly healthier life. What The Fork Are You Eating? gives you a plan for how to eat good, nutrient dense food with literally an aisle-by-aisle run down that you can take to the store, and 50 original recipes to keep you satiated and feeling great. If I had a dollar for every time I have heard “Well what DO you eat?” I would be writing this from a beach in Fiji in early retirement. This is the first book that I have read where I feel like it gives you not only the complete picture for why or why not to eat something – but a true plan for how to make those changes and get on the right track.
What The Fork Are You Eating? goes on sale December 26th and can be preordered from Amazon in both paperback and Kindle versions. It really is the perfect book to help you give yourself and your family a nutrition makeover for 2015.
