Recently on a Blogging Forum I am on, a thread was started about the new Justin Bieber movie coming out – Never Say Never. The question was simply “Why in the World would Justin Bieber be coming out with a movie!?” (and why is it in 3D… that’s just creepy) Now, I am a sucker for a good success story, and Justin certainly has become a complete phenomenon… but does anyone stop to ask WHY?
Now, Justin Bieber isn’t actually my purpose for this post – I actually think he is a cutie pie and can only hope he grows up as well as Zac Efron. (be still my heart) But one can not talk about famous people in the music industry of 2011 without Bieber Fever sneaking in there somewhere. My purpose of THIS post is more geared towards the women of the music industry – specifically Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and Nicki Manaj.
Lady Gaga exploded on the scene in 2008/2009 with “Poker Face” – the one (and only) good song she ever produced. Ever since then she has ruled the media and air waves with everything from close-calls on Vajayjay shots to trashing the Catholic church by swallowing a rosary and using names with Biblical meanings in a song about sex and promiscuity. Lady Gaga is one of the most sought after shows in America today, and even Forbes listed her at #7 on their annual list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Can someone just tell me WHY?
Then there is Ke$ha. This little jewel came out with the well known “Tik Tok” glamorizing everything from unprotected sex to brushing your teeth with Jack Daniels Whiskey…. CLASSY. She has since come out with a song she claims was supposed to be about bullying and to empower “teens” to be comfortable with their own sexuality. However, the lyrics – which include having “Jesus on my necklace” and “We’re sellin’ our clothes, sleepin’ in cars Dressin’ it down, hittin’ on dudes (HARD!)”…. YEAH, that’s EXACTLY what teens need to be doing…
*blank stare…. still looking for an answer to WHY we make these people famous… just sayin*
And then there is my favorite…. Nicki Manaj. First of all, her birth name is Maraj – so to change it to “Manaj” just sets the tone for trashy. Top it off with bright pink hair and classless lyrics in most all of her songs and what do you get!?! Someone else that exudes trash, lack of class, and ZERO integrity that America has made famous. (If you have no idea who I am talking about – she would be the one who tells Anna Nicole Smith to “say Hi to Mary and Joseph” in the hit pop song “Bottoms Up.” I know… CLASSY.) Poor MTV even gave her a TV show in which I nearly choked to death laughing at her screaming at someone in her studio about how “no one takes her seriously” (I paraphrased – enter numerous F-Bombs… yes, between just those five words) while wearing a neon cotton candy style wig. No, sweetness, I can’t IMAGINE why no one takes you seriously…
Now before you go off on me telling me these women are “artists” and all that ridiculousness, let me just tell you – I am all for Freedom of Speech. It is one of the reasons I love blogging. I am all for people expressing themselves in any way they see fit. I am all for using Rock N Roll to push the limits and make a point.
What I am NOT for is three WOULD-BE (could-be) attractive women, targeting a younger crowd – heck TEENAGERS in some instances – and promoting smoking, drinking, sex… I mean, don’t they have that pushed into their faces ENOUGH without it being on the radio too? It is no wonder teenagers are getting pregnant by the hundreds trying to get on MTV… the same place who is promoting these three women as Goddesses. It’s our very own Baby Boom… CLASSY.
These women should be ashamed of themselves. As women and ESPECIALLY mothers of daughters should be outraged. I am not a “Prude” by any STRETCH of the imagination, but I am a woman and a mother of a Tween who is tired of having to say things like “yes, I realize that your ‘idol’ thinks it is ok to brush her teeth with a bottle of Jack but that is not in fact hygienic” and “no, you can not stay out all night or sleep in cars – EVER – I don’t care how old you are..” or even “no you should not have three to four random partners in one night with Biblical names no one recognizes and while we are on the subject, SEX is something that is supposed to be sacred and shared with someone you deeply love – not something you do to pass the time with your ‘friends’.”
I am not old enough for this to be just a “mother not liking the ‘New Generation’ of music” – this is more about a woman who believes that we are ALL in the state we are in because we do not DEMAND better for ourselves, and why would the next generation understand that, when they are flooded with “role models” like these?
As mothers it is our job to teach our daughters to be self respecting, honorable, classy young women. Instead, we continue to make women like Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, and Nicki Manaj famous…. I just wish someone could tell me WHY.
