My Vegetable Garden Update

In June we started a Vegetable Garden in our back yard as part of accomplishing my Life List.   The first two weeks or so, Mike tended to the garden almost daily while I was recovering from my surgery, but sadly neither of us have spent much time out there since.  I think it was a good thing though, as I was getting kinda discouraged about my little plants not really GROWING anything.  (Did I mention I am a bit “instant gratification!?”)

Today though after dinner we ventured out to check on how things were going (growing?!) and much to my delight I saw this:

My Cucumbers:

My Tomato:

My Bell Peppers:

Though I still won't be making a salad any time soon, I am still very proud of my little garden.  I know eventually we will have all kinds of yummy veggies right in our back yard.  How exciting THAT is!  Our corn is over waist high and the cantaloupe vines are practically taking over.  I cant WAIT for those to start producing!

The one thing I do need to know though, is how I know when my sweet potatoes are ready?  Since they grow underground, do we just randomly dig them up and replant if they aren't ready yet?  Or is there a way to tell anything from above ground?

I should be able to write “Gardening For Dummies” by the time this is over…

Not sure about sweet potatoes, but for regular potatoes, I was told that when the tops start to brown and look like they’re dying, it’s time to pull them out.

Ok I will keep an eye out for that then, cause everything “on top” is pretty and green right now!

Looks awesome! I haven’t been able to tend to it this year, but I have a little container veggie garden on our deck. It’s very satisfying and fun to grow your own veggies!

Congrats on your garden and on your soon to be harvest. Your garden had grown well despite your not so hands on for them. You had prepared them well. Sweet potatoes usually produce within three months. You can check them out by digging a bit on the sides. Good luck.
