We have had a lot of changes this year in the Moscato household. With The Teen heading off to college and Midge heading to middle school, the structure of our daily routines has shifted significantly. The biggest change for me has been the time of day I go to the gym. For the last couple of years, I have gone first thing in the morning, but with the new schedule, it is easiest for me to go in the afternoon and then head straight to get Midge from school. This works fine for working out – the problem is I am always crazy hungry when I leave the gym. I have to go straight to get Midge from school where I sit in the car line for nearly an hour – yes, seriously – and then home to prepare dinner. I needed something that would curb my appetite and not ruin my dinner that I could eat while sitting in the car. I headed off to Walmart and found my solution – Mom's Bento Box!

I have been packing the kids lunches for over 12 years – so I am pretty much a pro at this! My goals were pretty simple – I needed a good amount of protein since it was my post-workout snack but wouldn't ruin my appetite for dinner that would be just a short couple of hours later. I also didn't want to blow the progress I made at the gym, so making sure my snack was good for me was a top priority. I found a great little Bento-style lunch box and went to work on choosing snacks I could put together easily – starting with something to drink.
Honest Tea® Organic Honey Green Tea is the perfect grab-and-go size that is perfect for my post-workout snack. It “just a tad sweet” and quenches my ravenous thirst from a rigorous workout.
Next up was my proteins – starting with Lorissa’s Kitchen Korean Barbeque Beef Steak Strips. I am only a little embarrassed to admit how hooked I have become on this delicious little bag of goodness that you can find right up by the registers at your local Walmart. They are easy to grab and go – and perfect for making my Mom Bento Box since each bag has two servings!
Lorissa’s Kitchen uses only 100% Grass-Fed Beef and Responsibly Raised Pork in their products which are naturally gluten-free and have No Preservatives, No Added Growth Hormones, No Added MSG and No Added Nitrites. Lorissa’s Kitchen is a delicious, premium prep-free protein snack so you can literally just grab and go… or in my case grab and pack and go. It looks like a traditional jerky, but it actually has a higher moisture content than traditional jerky, which makes it much more tender.
Then I filled in the rest of my little containers with light foods that had good flavor and fiber. I like dried fruits and veggies because they give you some crunch without a bunch of calories. I also threw in some of my favorite roasted turkey breast deli meat with whipped chive cream cheese rolled up for days I am super hungry. Voila!
When putting together your Bento Box there are a couple things to keep in mind. First, remember that the whole point to your Bento Box is to create a meal or snack that is good for you as well as satisfies your hunger cravings. Choose foods that are good for you as well as visually appealing and offer a variety of colors and textures.
Next, choose the perfect size Bento Box or container. Since this one is for my after gym snack, I went with a smaller, more compact box that I can grab and go. It even has an ice pack! If you can not find a divided container, consider using silicone cups which will help separate the wet foods from the dry foods.
Finally, pack the foods tightly in your Bento box so that they do not shift around. Park the larger, bulkier food first, and then have fun fitting your others in the open spaces. Since part of the appeal to Bento is it looking great, you do not want to open your box and see a mixed up mess. Plus you have filled your Bento with all of your favorites! Enjoy them!
