An Afternoon at Bayview Park #OurLand

By Moscato Mom 7 Comments

Growing up, I spent a ton of time outdoors. From the beach to the parks to my own back yard - I was part of the "outside" generation for sure. When I was given the opportunity to team up with MomDot Media and The Trust for Public Land to help spread the word about the new #OurLand campaign which is helping to protect public land like the places I grew up, I knew Bayview Park was the perfect place to go to talk about how important parks are to me. Bayview was such a huge part of my childhood - from watching my parents play tennis on the courts to learning how to drive in the parking lot, to sharing a first kiss down on the little pier. But I realize now how lucky I was to have a huge park like Bayview to make all of those amazing memories. In many cities, one in three residents lacks access to a park or natural area, and with America's open spaces disappearing at a rate of 6,000 acres a day, we're at risk of losing our most cherished outdoor escapes.

our land 4

The Trust for Public Land (https://www.tpl.org/) is an organization whose mission it is to create and protect parks and other natural places, right in your own backyard. "The Trust for Public Land creates parks and protects land for people, ensuring healthy, livable communities for generations to come. We protect the places people care about and create close-to-home parks—particularly in and near cities, where 80% of Americans live." You can do your part to support public land by submitting your own virtual postcard on the TPL website, telling why the outdoors are important to you. Just upload a picture or video of your favorite outdoor space on their website and share what makes that place special.

It is hard to narrow down just one reason why Bayview Park is so special to me. It has long been the meeting place for me and so many of my friends and loved ones, and carries both happy memories and bittersweet memories from growing up. Just driving down there made me think of my friend Jason who passed away just a few years ago way too soon. Jason and I spent countless afternoons there just talking and overlooking the bayou. I can not even look out over the water without thinking of him and missing him like crazy.

bayview cross

Bayview was a place for first dates - and a place for break ups. It was a place to stop for pictures on the way to Prom, or a place to end the night when you just weren't quite ready to go home. Bayview is where we always went to watch the fireworks on both New Years and Fourth of July, and a place to go to just sit and clear your head. It was a place for great festivals and a place for memorials. A place to play and a place to worship. Whether you spent the entire day or just an hour, Bayview Park was a little piece of paradise.

our land 5

Bayview Park was packed with people enjoying this beautiful day with us. Even though it was overcast, the temperatures were in the 70s with a light breeze coming off the water. Every where you looked you saw families enjoying time outdoors. There was a large family reunion going on under one picnic table - with a group of young men playing soccer while the women watched and cheered. Another picnic table was celebrating a young girls birthday decked out with Mickey Mouse decorations. At another table a photographer was photographing some parents to-be, the couple cradling the Moms growing belly. The water was full of boats and jetskis, kayaks and even a group of competitive rowers practicing. The piers were full of fisherman of all ages while the beaches were full of dogs playing in the water - chasing and retrieving sticks their owners threw. It was clear that Bayview is an important place for many of us.

Midge and I grabbed lunch on our way and found a nice little grassy spot to enjoy our lunch overlooking the water. It has been years since I have had a picnic, and this reminded me of just how fun it can be. We laughed and talked and watched squirrels run around the tops of the trees over our heads. When we finished eating, we headed off to explore. Bayview Park is 30 acres of beauty with everything from a dog park to covered picnic tables, tennis courts, walking trails, fishing piers, and more.

The playground is awesome - with two huge jungle gyms, a full swing set and more. Midge had no problem making friends with just about everyone there. Even my Dad stopped by to enjoy some time at Bayview. It was great to spend some alone time just the three of us... well, along with a zillion other people.

bayview park playground

There are signs posted around the park as well telling about all of the plants and wildlife that live there. It was fun to try to find the different species from the signs. It turned in to a scavenger hunt for both of us. I am pretty certain we found everything except the Great Blue Heron. Midge insisted that we go back again soon to try and find him - which I will be happy to oblige.

midge 2014

This is probably my favorite part of Bayview Park. It is so quiet and peaceful on the pier. Midge and I both got lost for a few moments just soaking in the beauty of the water. The seagulls and pelicans sit lazily on the pier and in the water, often breaking into a cackle that makes you wonder what they are laughing at. Occasionally a boat or jetski will whiz by - the driver always giving a polite wave.

I can not imagine ever not having Bayview Park to go to, so I was honored to join in this campaign and share one of my all time favorite places with you. I hope you will join in this campaign with the Trust for Public Land and help to protect areas like Bayview and upload a picture of your favorite place and why it is important to you. I did.

Universal Orlando CityWalk

By Moscato Mom Leave a Comment

What do you get when you put some of the best restaurants next to the best night clubs connected to the best theme park? You get Universal Orlando's CityWalk - THE place to go for amazing Nightlife at Universal Orlando.

Universal CityWalk

Every day that I was in Orlando for the FacingFearsTogether trip I spent some time at CityWalk - whether it was to grab a bite to eat, do some shopping for the girls, or have a couple several lot of cocktails. Though CityWalk is family friendly by day - sporting a cool putt putt golf arena and movie theater - at night it goes to the adults with live bands, killer night clubs and great restaurants. Our first night there Mickey and I dined at Margaritaville where you absolutely must try the friend cheese curds dipped in ranch dressing. Yes, I totally abandoned Whole30 for this little indulgence - and it was amazing. We then went to Pat O'Briens and watched the dueling pianos for a while. And you know - to sample the cocktails... just to make sure they were safe for everyone... we are thoughtful like that.

Universal Orlando Islands of Adventure Theme Park

By Moscato Mom Leave a Comment

The whole time I was walking through the Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando I was wondering what the heck I had gotten myself in to. I am such a scaredy cat - I send The Teen to movies with Mike when I am worried they might be scary. Yes, she is 15 and less of a coward than her mother. Don't judge. I think pretty much the only thing that helped me make it through (besides the death grip I had on Mickey's right arm while I was nestled in between Summer's shoulder blades) was the promise of a full day at Universal Orlando Islands of Adventure Theme Park the next day.

Islands of Adventure Logo

I haven't been to Universal in years... like... since Back to the Future ride was still cool. (Didn't I say no judging? Stopit.) And man have things changed. Now, I of course got to scope out a few things while I was walking through Halloween Horror Nights, but since you know that it was seldom that I actually had my eyes OPEN it felt like the first time. I was super excited to ride the Hollywood Rip Ride RockIt - their newest roller coaster that lets you jam out to your favorite tunes while zooming through the air at 65 miles an hour. I chose Evanescence "Bring Me To Life" for my song - HOLYWOW. The tune is timed *perfectly* with the coaster - it was absolutely amazing. I could have ridden that one over and over and over. It was as incredible as it sounds - times a thousand.

Universal Orlando Cabana Bay Beach Resort

By Moscato Mom Leave a Comment

Now that things have finally settled down (read:  I can sleep again without visions from Halloween Horror Nights seeping in to my dreams) I am excited to tell you about all of the other amazing stuff I did when I joined the Two Traveling Moms and a handful of other friends for the #FacingFearsTogether event. The first - and maybe most awesome - was the resort where we stayed. The Cabana Bay Beach Resort is Universal Orlando's newest hotel - and by far the coolest one I have ever stayed in.

From the moment you pull on the to Cabana Bay Beach Resort's property, you are propelled back in to the 1950's and 60's - from the architecture to the music playing to the hotel staff uniform. Even the sign out front boasts "Cool Air" and " Color TV"... how cool is that?! Inside the front doors you will find a huge open concept with a great seating area and cute little bar nestled in the corner. The center of the lobby boasts a huge atrium of palm trees. I was waiting for a Jetson's robot to round the corner.

Check in was quick and easy and then we were off to our rooms. I had no idea what to expect when we opened the doors - but I loved it. Suddenly I felt like I had fallen on to the set of MadMen and I was determined to find Don Draper. I have some ummm... suggestions for his advertising.

Halloween Horror Nights 2014 #HHN24

By Moscato Mom 21 Comments

I am a chicken. I mean, a big one. I am the girl that spooks herself in dark windows, jumps at stuff on tv, and will nearly kill herself to get to the remote to change the channel when scary movie trailers play. But when my friends Toni and Mellisa from Two Traveling Moms put together the #FacingFearsTogether event for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando, I jumped at the chance to go. I mean, the best way to overcome your fears is to face them, right? That 's what I tell my Divas in my direct sales coaching - and I should practice what I preach. So I signed up, was accepted... and promptly began panicking.

HHN24 Logo

Named “Nation’s Best Halloween Event” for seven consecutive years by Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards, Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando puts you up close and personal with some of the most terrifying sights you will ever see. There are eight horror houses including The Walking Dead, Alien versus Predator, Dracula Untold, and more, plus several "Scare Zones" throughout the park. There are some places that are safe that you can walk around without fear (read: the only places I actually breathed) and even two shows that were my favorite part of the whole event.

Have a #SummerBlast at Hilton Bonnet Creek in Orlando Florida

By Moscato Mom 21 Comments

Last weekend the family and I had the pleasure of spending a weekend at the Hilton Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida as part of their SummerBlast! Promotion. To say it was an amazing weekend is an understatement - it was absolutely the perfect way to kick off the Summer.

IT’S BACK! This summer we’re celebrating 101-days of summer vacation! As part of SummerBlast!, you and your family can enjoy fabulous summer fun at the pool and throughout the resort. Join the SummerBlast! team at our pool, as they provide an afternoon of rockin’ pooltime fun, including music, games and prizes! Also, join us for Ducktona 500 on Saturdays, and you can win a prize if your duck is the first to cross the finish line… in our lazy river pool! You've gotta see this to believe it!

From the minute you step out of your car, you will fall in love with the Hilton Bonnet Creek. From the friendly valet service to the check in staff - everyone is so nice and accommodating. You can choose to have your room face the pool and Downtown Disney - which I highly suggest. Besides having a beautiful view every morning - there is another benefit which we would learn later in the weekend. More on that in a minute.

We arrived mid afternoon so we quickly showered and changed and headed off to dine at the Pirates Adventure Dinner Theater. There are several dinner theaters in the area - all of which are fantastic! I've been to Medieval Times, Arabian Nights, Sleuth's Mystery Theater, and now Pirates Adventure.  It was a blast! The Pirates Adventure really gets the audience involved more than any of the others which the girls thought was really cool. I highly recommend the dinner theaters - especially for older kids.  And check out KGSTickets.com for the best ticket prices on everything in the Kissimmee/Orlando area!

Pirates Adventure Dinner Theater starts nightly at 8:15 - and lasts a full two hours. So needless to say - we were ready for bed by the time it was over.  Thankfully it is just a few miles away from Hilton Bonnet Creek, so we were able to get back and get tucked in before anyone fell asleep. I was so happy for valet parking!

The next day we slept in and decided instead of going to any of the parks, we would spend the day right there at the hotel enjoying all of the SummerBlast festivities.  I think that was my favorite part of the entire weekend - not having to GO anywhere! The Hilton Bonnet Creek has so many things to do - you do not even have to walk off property to have an amazing time. We got up, got our bathing suits on, and headed down to the pool. Named #1 by TripAdvisor’s Top 10 Fantastic Pools - the Hilton Bonnet Creek pool is surrounded by a flowing lazy river that you can absolutely spend all day in... which is exactly what we did.

hilton bonnet creek pool

We even had lunch right there on the pool deck thanks to Beech - their poolside grill! I had a cheeseburger that was to die for and the girls had chicken and french fries. Mike and I also had pina coladas... you know... for research purposes and all. It was great to get to eat and not even leave our spot!

Florida Vacation Spots - Kennedy Space Center #VisitKSC

By Moscato Mom 20 Comments

A few weeks ago Midge and I had the pleasure of joining a handful of other amazing bloggers for a weekend at Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral, Florida. Growing up in Florida I always wanted to be an astronaut... right up until I realized I was deathly afraid of heights... but we watched every shuttle launch like it was a national holiday. I remember being a child on the swingset and pretending to be astronauts being launched in to space as we swung higher and higher. So when I was offered the opportunity to take Midge and go to Kennedy Space Center and actually meet real astronauts, I actually squealed. And cheered. And talked about it for weeks ad nauseum.

The weekend was absolutely everything I thought it would be.

visitksc

The first part of our trip included Midge's first airplane ride. She was stoked. I silently said a prayer as we boarded the tiny little plane - that had PROPELLERS...

first plane ride

Two hours later though we landed in beautiful Orlando and quickly got a ride directly to Kennedy Space Center - about a 40 minute ride from the airport. We grabbed a bite to eat and then met up with the other Bloggers and kids for a private tour around NASA - including the viewing deck for the launch pad where every.single.person who has walked on the moon has left from... how cool is that?!

launch pad

We also got to check out the Vehicle Assembly Building - where they put together the shuttles. At the time that the VAB was built in 1966 it was the largest building in existence. It still has the largest doors of any building with huge grey doors measuring 460 feet tall. For me this was the most iconic part of the trip because I remember watching the shuttles roll out of that enormous building. It was so surreal to actually be standing in front of it.

vehicle assembly building nasa

John was our tour guide - and absolutely one of the coolest people I have ever met. He was funny, kept the kids (and adults!) engaged and hanging on his every word, and knew so much I actually began recording him because he was rattling off facts so quickly. When you go on this tour - you must ask for John. He really made the entire tour amazing.

ksc tour guide john

Our last stop was the Apollo/Saturn V Center where they have a Saturn Moon Rocket on display. The very size of this thing is hard to even wrap your brain around. The Saturn V Moon Rocket is the most powerful rocket ever built and one of only three rockets in existence. It spans 363 feet long...

apollo saturn v center
day one

We finished our evening in the most spectacular way possible - watching the rocket launch while dining with an astronaut. YES.I'M.SERIOUS. Honestly, I am still pinching myself and wondering if it was a dream. But here's Midge... just hanging out with Astronaut Robert Springer.

astronaut robert springer

And then this happened....

And that was only the first day!  I will share Day Two with you soon! One thing is for sure - if you are looking for a fun place to take your kids this Summer that is as educational as it is entertaining - you should totally consider going to Kennedy Space Center. And if you go between now and May 31, 2015, use the promo code VISITKSC for $5 off admission tickets! I promise it is a vacation you will never forget!

Filming For Family Travel With Colleen Kelly

By Moscato Mom 19 Comments

A few weeks ago the family and I had the pleasure of meeting up with an amazing crew to film a short spot for an upcoming tv show on PBS all about vacationing in Pensacola Florida. Having both grown up here, Mike and I were more than happy to share some of our favorite tips and places to visit here at home. I was also excited that some other blogger friends of mine are going to be featured on the show too - like Kari from RaisedSouthern and Toni from ADailyDoseOfToni.

family travel with colleen kelly

The show is called Family Travel with Colleen Kelly, and each show is focused around one great location to visit with you and your little ones. Past shows have includes places like Chicago, New Orleans, and San Antonio - so I was quite excited to see our little southern beach town make the cut for the show. I have always known Pensacola was one of the greatest places in the world to live and raise a family, but to be acknowledged by a show like Colleen's makes it just that much more awesome.

moscatomom tv show filming

For our spot we got to go to the Portofino Boardwalk - which growing up was always the Quietwater Boardwalk. It was kind of a dreary afternoon when we filmed, but we all still had a great time. The Boardwalk has so many amazing memories for me - and is still somewhere that we go often either to catch some rays and have lunch or to have our infamous Bushwacker and listen to some of the greatest bands around. We got to do some shopping, some sightseeing, and of course Mike's favorite - have one of the amazing pizzas from Papa's Pizza - the best pizza on the beach!

There are so many great places to visit in Pensacola  - some of which Colleen got to check out while she was here! I will be sure to let you know when the show will air so you can tune in. Until then you can check out her previous shows - but I warn you  - when I watched them it made me want to vacation to every single one of them...

Where is your favorite family vacation spot?

#SeasTheDay at XPLOR - Royal Caribbean Cruise Excursion -Cozumel Mexico

By Moscato Mom 1 Comment

Ever since Brandaction: Global Getaway, the "theme" for Brandcation has been ADVENTURE. From ziplining through the Smokey Mountains to parasailing on the Gulf Coast to hanging with alligators in the swamps of Central Florida - we have always done something adventurous. When we booked the sixth Brandcation - SeasTheDay with Royal Caribbean - we immediately set out to find the most adventurous excursion we could find... and boy did we ever.

explor

Xplor is a natural adventure park located in the Riviera Maya, very close to Cancun. Discover new sensations by flying over treetops with our 14 zip lines, driving an amphibious vehicle on trails that run through the jungle as well as inside caves; swim in the underground river surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites; and take an exciting raft ride paddling with your hands while wondering at the rock formation process created by nature millions of years ago.

Ten of us decided to go to XPLOR - the largest group for any one excursion - and we all had an absolute blast. As soon as we arrived we broke up in to groups - because I have been ziplining so many times before, I wanted to experience everything else first... including the buffet.  Hey, aren't you supposed to eat everything in sight when you are on a cruise? It's in the rules somewhere I am sure... The entire day was spent riding ATVs, eating, paddling rafts around stalagmites (or stalactites - whatever) eating, swimming through underground caves, and eating. It was everything an excursion should be!

xplor excursion

The cost of the XPLOR excursion is $185 and includes your transportation to and from the ship as well as all of the attractions at the park and the unlimited buffet. When you get there you are assigned a locker for your belongings and a numbered helmet which you have to wear throughout the whole park.  The helmet has both a number and a GPS chip in it - which is both for safety and for their awesome photo service which takes pictures of you literally all over the park.

xplor excursion 2

The only downside to XPLOR is the travel time - it took us over an hour and a half to get from the ship to the park. But once we got there, it was worth it. I did purchase the photo package which was another $109 I believe - but again - I totally thought that was worth it as well. Some of the pictures are absolutely hysterical.

If you are looking for an excursion in Cozumel that will be an experience of a lifetime - I highly recommend checking our XPLOR.  You can book the excursion right through your Royal Caribbean Account. The park is beautiful, the food is awesome,  the attractions are super fun - and you will walk so much you will have zero guilt about anything you eat for the rest of your vacation.

Seriously.

Disclosure: I paid full price for this excursion - and it was worth every penny.

Our #SeasTheDay Cruise Ship Door Decorating Contest

By Moscato Mom 3 Comments

Last week I went on my very first cruise for Brandcation #6 - SeasTheDay with Royal Caribbean. Mike and I have been wanting to take a cruise for years, and though I was sad to go on my first cruise without him, it was an opportunity we agreed I could not pass up. Now, I will be telling you all about the actual cruise - but I wanted to start by showing off my amazing fellow bloggers, and the great work they all did on decorating their cruise ship doors. We issued a contest to the person who decorated their door with what what "#SeasTheDay" represented for them.  To be honest, I wasn't sure anyone was going to really participate - no one seemed real excited about the idea on the forum. So we thought the contest would be easy to judge... instead, it took us over an hour to choose a winner - because every one of them was just simply amazing.

The ladies all paired up to decorate their cabin doors - check out their awesome work -

April and Arena kicked things off with their Top Ten Ways to #SeasTheDay - giving us their checklist of things they wanted to do while on the Liberty of the Seas -

Lisa and Angela showed off their mad streamer skills with these cute little fish... one donning a sombrero of course -

Leah and Kim showed off some positive ways to #SeasTheDay - and below had ways to avoid being #ThatGirl -

cruise door decorations 6

Summer and Lori showed off our rockin itinerary for the four days on the ship. Our days were so jam packed with cool stuff to do - almost all of which were 100% included in the cost of the cruise - I was impressed that these ladies FIT everything under those tabs!

Annie and Kat channeled their inner Marilyn Monroe for this underwater masterpiece... who knew these two silly ladies would end up being the "belles of the ball"... no wonder they are fans of Ms Monroe...

Heather and Stephanie brought some pirates to the party... did someone say booty?

cruise ship door decorations 5

Stefanie and Maggie got creative and used the Royal Caribbean Cruise Compass - the daily magazine you get every evening with the list of all of the ship happenings for the following day.  Scissors + Cruise Compass + Glitter Glue =

cruise ship door decorations 2

Jenn and Kenda did a true "shout out" from their door - turning their #SeasTheDay moment into a Bucket List Success!

cruise ship door decorations 3

Lee and Amy encouraged people to follow along in our adventures posting their Facebook and Twitter profiles along with our hashtag - and even took the time to personalize it with their pictures.

cruise door decorations 8

Joy and Brandy incorporated our "mascot" - a sheep - in to their decoration. Do ewe get it?

cruise door decorations 9

Courtney and Dawn put up their business card "fish" - the cool part was that several of these "fish" had already been taken by the time we did the judging. Cool way to promote your blog! They also had a place for people to leave them a note on their dry erase board - which also had a few cute notes from other shipmates.

cruise door decorations 13

There was no question where the Wild Women were... Sheila and Jenn didnt even bother trying to hide their crazy... (girls after my own heart)

cruise door decorations 15

This has to be the best use of paint and cotton balls ever. Jessica and Maria painted themselves right there on the beaches of Cozumel enjoying a fruity cocktail... which is exactly what they did when we got there. 🙂

cruise door decorations 18

Brittany and Mary incorporated the whole Brandcation crew in their door - posting pics of every single one of us. I loved the idea - and even chose to overlook that they chose the absolute worst picture of me to ever hit the interwebs....

cruise door decorations 19

Cyndy and Jennifer got creative and had their heads super imposed on some pinups for this retro throwback theme door.  They even brought tulle for the waves. Seriously, I told you these ladies were crazy creative.

cruise door decorations 20

The winner of our Cruise Door Decorating Contest was Jen and Kelly - who turned their door into a "Selfie Station" that went "viral" with their custom #SeasTheDay magnets.

They decorated the Selfie Station so you could pose for pics at the door - which was awesome - but the magnets are what really did it for us - especially after we saw people taking the magnets, filling them out, and then sticking them on their own doors.

Throughout the rest of the cruise we saw these magnets scattered around the cabin doors - and even I now have one happily placed on the metal cabinet in my office to remind me of the best vacation ever!

Judging this contest was the hardest part of Brandcation because everyone did such an amazing job! Thanks to everyone for participating - we absolutely loved your doors!

Check Out The Cape Coral #WestinKidsClub

By Moscato Mom 4 Comments

Kids_Club_logo

Last weekend my family and I had the privilege to check out the Westin Kids Club at the new Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village.  We took the day of Friday to drive down - getting on the road about 7am.  It was a great drive - Midge and The Teen were set up with every kind of electronic you can imagine in the back seat, and Mike and I enjoyed getting some uninterrupted time to talk about everything from predicting who is going to win the Superbowl to how many bedrooms we really need in the new house.

The Resort was incredible - everything is top notch.  Check in was quick and easy and the layout of the resort made everything very easy to get to.  We stayed in a two bedroom suite which was great - over 1300 square feet... we sure didnt feel like we were in a "hotel" - it was beautiful. We all quickly took our places and the relaxing began...

westin resort rooms

The first night we just relaxed in the room and listened to the sounds of the band coming from the Nauti Mermaid - the bar and grill out on the deck. I do not remember the name of the girl singing - but she was incredible.  Everything from Adele to Bryan Adams... and she pulled it off beautifully.  I was impressed.

The next morning Midge and I got up and headed to the Westin Kids Club.  The Westin Kids Club is an area just for kids ages 4-12 to have fun and play while Mom and Dad relax.  The room is filled with all kinds of fun games and activities that kids can do, and is staffed by a specially trained Westin Kids Club Associates.  They even have snacks!

cape coral westin kids club

You can choose for the kids to go in the morning, afternoon, or all day.  They even have a Kids Night Out event every Friday night where parents can drop off their kiddos to enjoy an evening at Marker92 or the Nauti Mermaid - the two awesome restaurants on site.  You even get a discount on the Kids Night In fee when you bring back your dinner receipt.

Midge and I spent the morning with Mary - and had a ball.  We did everything from play board games to paint sand dollars and finished up the Ultimate Championship of Wii Bowling.  I am pretty sure Mary has the patience of a Saint - there were a few times I started to feel my blood pressure rise at Midge, but Mary took it all in stride.  You can tell she is really great with kids and enjoys her job.

westin cape coral kids club activities

While Midge and I were hanging out at the Westin Kids Club, Mike and The Teen headed off to explore Cape Coral.  There is so much to do in that area - nature trails, geocaching, dolphin/manatee tours, shopping and more. They stopped to play at a local putt putt golf and arcade not far from the resort.

putt putt

Later that afternoon we had burgers at the Nauti Mermaid... I am not sure how they make their french fries - but they are the best tasting fries in the Universe.  We may or may not have dipped them in the queso... hey, calories do not count on vacation, right?

We finished off our stay dining at Marker92 - the restaurant inside the resort. The Teen and I had the shrimp ravioli with creamy pesto, Mike had a sirloin, and Midge had the chicken fingers... with more of those amazing fries from lunch. The shrimp ravioli was absolutely incredible - and we even used those amazing french fries to sop up every drop of the creamy pesto... it was that good. We listened to the band  and watched the sun set over the marina, and then headed to the room to watch tv and settle in to leave early the next morning.

The entire trip was short - but perfect. Just a nice little getaway for the four of us.

Get Your Snuba On

By Moscato Mom 27 Comments

Last weekend while at Brandcation: DESTINation ... I fell in love.    Growing up on the Gulf Coast has given me the opportunity to do a LOT of water sports - from skiing to surfing to parasailing.  But this weekend I found what I truly want to do - scuba dive.

snuba diving

Now, Snuba Diving is a little bit different than SCUBA diving.  When you Snuba, instead of carrying your own tank on your back, you are actually attached to a raft which carries two tanks - enough air for you and up to three of your friends.   Your airline is about 20 feet long - so plenty long to let you get to the bottom of the inlet, with the security of knowing you can not drift too far away from safety.  And, since you have a certified diving instructor going with you, you do not have to be certified yourself to dive.

Our Day At The Gulf Breeze Zoo

By Moscato Mom 12 Comments

I have not been to The Gulf Breeze Zoo in years!  My grandfather and I used to go often, and I have many great memories from there, but I went a few years ago and had a bad experience... we saw very few animals, the ones that were there did not look happy... it was very sad.

So I stayed away a while, until yesterday when my Dad and Wanda had the idea to take the girls for the day.  I asked if I could tag along, and I am so glad that I did.

I had the kind of day that I remember with my Grandpa - and we all remarked on how beautiful everything looks.  It was an absolutely amazing day.

We headed towards The Zoo in the early afternoon, but I called ahead to ask what the best time of day was to see the animals.

The girl explained that normally as the sun starts to go down - around 4 or 5 - that they come out again and its also the time they feed the animals.  PERFECT!  So we killed some time and then headed back to The Zoo.

On the way out there I stopped by Target for a new Zoom Lens for my camera.  It was on sale so I was a happy camper.

Though I do wish I had spent some time getting to learn it a bit first.  Of the 200+ pictures I took, about 50% are AMAZING - like magazine quality - and a few... well, they are magazine quality of the CAGES but not the animals in them.

My favorite picture so far:

And then there are the images like this one:

Even with my not-so-stellar performance behind the camera, I still did manage to get some fantastic shots of our day to make our memories last forever.  (These are all UN-touched! I just added the name and border!)  Here are some of the best ones:

My favorite part of the day was the "Free-Flight Aviary" where they had probably 200 parakeets (I looked it up and they call them Australian Budgies...) flying free, and you can go in and feed them seeds that are stuck to popsicle sticks.

The girls freaked at first afraid the little beauties were going to hurt them, but after a few minutes, we were all having a blast, COVERED in little bitty birds.

While walking around we spotted a peacock lying kinda half on its side... kind of at a strange angle.  We told one of the young ladies working the grounds, and she not only immediately went and checked on the bird, but took a moment to tell us a bit about them and some of their habits.

You could tell this girl loved her job.  We were super impressed with her.  (I wish I had gotten her name!)

We also rode the Train which was a blast.  We sat in the very back so that I could take great pictures... it was the first time ever that I was TOO TALL for something!  There was NO foot room in the caboose!  It was a great opportunity for a picture though!

My Zoo Tips:

  • Go in the late afternoon - like after 3pm.  The Zoo is open extended hours in the summertime, so you still have plenty of time to enjoy the entire Zoo, but the critters are more active.  Plus very few people were there - probably because of the heat, but it truly wasnt THAT bad.
  • Buy several Bird Feeder sticks!  They are only $1 and they go pretty quick.  Those parakeets Australian Budgies are well skilled in getting the seeds off quickly.
  • They have a covered picnic area just outside of The Zoo where you can pack a lunch and eat before or after your visit.  You are not allowed to take food in for obvious danger to the animals, but there is a place you can spread out and enjoy a picnic.
  • Wear comfy shoes!  I wore flipflops and my feet were KILLING me.  There is SO much great stuff to see now, that you do not want to miss any of it.  Wear comfy shoes even if your feet get hot, tennis shoes are the way to go.
  • They have drinks for sale scattered around the grounds, and even though they are $2 each, it is MORE than worth it on our 100* days.
  • Take plenty of quarters.  They still have the old bubblegum machine style food dispensers that I remember from 20 years ago that only take quarters,  and you KNOW you are going to want more food half way through.  Because really, what is more fun than feeding and getting totally slobbered on by 15 different animals... right?!
  • Everywhere we walked on the premises was wheel chair and stroller accessible.  If you have a little one - even if they normally do not ride in the stroller anymore- I would still recommend taking it.  If for nothing else, to carry your purse!
  • And finally, you do not need a zoom lens for all of these great pictures - the animals were so close I often had to stand back to be able to zoom in on the shot.  At The Zoo you get to have a real live experience of these animals "up close and personal."

We are all still beaming at how beautiful everything was at The Zoo, especially after the threats for it to close down in the last few years.  Though I was sad to see that they have turned the old Cafe into the "Reptile Pavilion," it is still a great place to go and spend the day with your family.

We will go back often, and I am considering buying Season Passes.  If you have ever been to The Zoo, I highly recommend you go and see it again.  It was a truly fantastic day, and though it made me miss my Daddy-T tremendously, it was great for my Dad to "carry on the tradition" with my girls.
