Crayon Art Valentine’s

Months ago I saw a pin on Pinterest showing how to make home made Valentine’s Day cards with crayons.  I pinned it knowing I wanted to try it out for Taylor’s first official Valentine’s Day party in Kindergarten this year.    Though ours didnt turn out quite as pretty, and it was a bit tougher than I anticipated, the girls and I had a fun time making them and Taylor is excited to share them with her classmates.

Home Made Crayon Art Valentine’s Cards

Supplies Needed:

  • 100+ crayons.  The lighter colors work best, and Crayola crayons hold their color much better than the cheap crayons.
  • Exacto Knife
  • Silicone Heart shaped mold.  Our was huge – I recommend Wilton’s smaller mold.
  • Small doilies or pretty scrapbooking paper
  • Pink card stock
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Elmers Glue

The first task is taking all of the paper wrapping off each crayon.  You can gently cut down the side with the Exacto knife to help, but make sure you get all of the paper and glue off each crayon.

Then, break each crayon into no less than 6 pieces.  This may require use of the Exacto again.  I think this was the girls’ favorite part.  After years of me screaming “do NOT break your crayons” they enjoyed sitting in front of me happily snapping them to bits.   I have to say though, it was pretty fun.  Next time you need to relieve some stress – just go break up a bunch of crayons.

Now here is where the decision factor comes in.  You can either group your colors together to make individual crayons with all of the same hues of the same color – or leave them all mixed up for a multi color mosaic.   Naturally if you ask the 5 year old to choose – she is going to go with the mosaic.  Worked for me.

Pile your crayons into the mold and place on a cookie sheet.  Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes at 350*.  VERY carefully pull them out as the colors will be completely liquified.  You do not want to move them around too much as the colors will mix and you will end up with one big, brown crayon.

Once they have cooled and hardened completely - I stuck ours in the freezer for a while – you can gently pull them out of the silicone mold to see what you have created.  Each crayon will have a different look.  This is when we learned that the next time we do this we will only use the brighter colors and the better quality (Crayola) crayons.  But even these turned out pretty neat.

To turn these beauties into Valentine’s Cards we cut our card stock in large circles using the lid of a large cup to make a perfect circle.  Write your greetings on one side of the circle.  Then using the glue stick, glue the doilies in the center of the circle on the opposite side of the greeting.  Once that is dry, use the Elmers Glue to affix the crayon into the center of the doilies and let dry overnight.

Like I said, ours were not as great as the ones on Pinterest, but we had a blast making them, and Taylor is proud to be taking them in to her first Valentine’s Day Party.   Even Sami thought they were pretty cool – which of course for a Tween is hard to admit.

PS – Now instead of yelling at the girls when they break a crayon, we just add them to the “heart box” to make more crayons throughout the year!

Have you ever melted crayons for crayon art?

Girls Day Out With TWO Tweens and a Toddler

After a fun Divas Night Out on Saturday night I wanted to spend some time with my Little Divas on Sunday before the craziness of the week begins again.  I have been patiently waiting for Gnomeo and Juliet for several months now, so even though the weather warranted some outside play, we headed to the Rave anyway.  The Tween begged asked if her friend could come with, so it turned into a group of four piled up with popcorn, Skittles, and Fanta Orange.   And of course, donned with 3D Glasses:

Gnomeo and Juliet was precious – even had a few sad spots where all three girls and I had to wipe away a tear or two.  There was great comedy, the characters were fantastic (I want to go get a pink flamingo yard ornament now… just sayin) and I think it was worth the $50 spent just on tickets.  Yikes, I know.

We came home and still had a few hours to kill before the Grammy’s began, so we baked up some Valentine’s Day Cupcakes and spent an hour just decorating and giggling.  The Tweens were never far from their cell phones, happily texting to half of the Middle School Student Body while sprinkling and icing the cupcakes … and each other.  The Toddler had her Barbie phone and never missed a text either – getting mad when I “didn’t respond” when she called me.  *sigh*

It was the perfect Sunday afternoon and a great way to get ready for a busy week ahead.  So how do you keep Two Tweens and a Toddler happy for hours?  Pillsbury’s gotcha covered.

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!

PS – I am proud to say that I did not even lick the icing off my fingers – I am sticking as best as I can to the Eat-Clean and cupcakes are CERTAINLY not part of that! But I am impressed I was able to stay away – just the fun of making them was enough for me! :)
